The Battle of Ankara was a huge event in history. It happened on July 28, 1402, on the Çubuk plain near Ankara. This fight was between two very strong leaders. One was Sultan Bayezid I, who ruled the Ottoman Empire. The other was Timur, a ruler from the Timurid Empire in Central Asia. Timur wanted to rebuild the great Mongol Empire. He had already conquered many places like Persia and Delhi. This battle changed how the Ottoman Empire worked for a long time.

Both sides brought very large armies to the fight. Timur had about 140,000 soldiers with him. Bayezid had a smaller army of no more than 85,000 men. Bayezid's troops included many different groups. Some were his own soldiers, like the Janissaries. Others were people from the Balkans, such as Serbians and Albanians. Bayezid even had 32 war elephants to help him.

Many things went wrong for the Ottoman army during the march. The weather was very hot in the middle of summer. Bayezid's men had to walk through the heat to reach Ankara. By the time they arrived, they were very tired and thirsty. They did not even have time to rest. Timur also used a clever plan to win. He moved the water from the Çubuk creek into a reservoir. This left the Ottoman soldiers with no water to drink.

The fighting was very intense on the battlefield. Serbian knights wore heavy black plate armor. This armor protected them well from the arrows used by Timur's horse archers. These Serbian soldiers fought very bravely. Timur even said they fought like lions. Some of these soldiers managed to save one of Bayezid's sons. They also saved the treasury and escaped to Constantinople. However, the Ottoman army was too weak to win.

Timur won a great victory at the end of the battle. He captured Bayezid in the nearby mountains. Bayezid died in captivity three months later. This loss was a disaster for the Ottoman state. The empire almost fell apart completely. Bayezid's sons began a civil war to fight for control. This war lasted for 11 years until 1413. This battle is famous because it was the only time an Ottoman Sultan was captured.
