Eugene's army surprised them. The Ottomans were stuck in the water. The battle was very hard for the Ottoman troops. Many soldiers fell into the river. The Sultan had to leave his army and run away.

Eugene's army won a big victory. They even took the Sultan's treasure chest. They also found the state seal. This was the first time an enemy took such a thing. The win helped end the long war. A peace treaty was signed in 1699. This changed who ruled much of the land.
