This large state once covered parts of modern Europe. He was born around the year 1561 to a noble family. His father, Jan Hieronimowicz Chodkiewicz, held a high position in Lithuania. Jan Karol spent many years studying at schools in Vilnius and Ingolstadt. He even visited Padua to continue his learning. After his studies, he returned home to start his military career. He began by raising a small group of about 50 to 100 men.

Chodkiewicz became known for being a very talented strategist.

His most famous moment happened at the Battle of Kircholm in 1605. At this battle, he led only about 4,000 troops. His soldiers included the Winged hussars, who were heavy cavalry. They fought a Swedish army that was three times larger than his own. Chodkiewicz won a massive victory that day. Because of this, many famous leaders sent him letters of praise. These included the Pope and even the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

His life was filled with many different wars and hard jobs. He fought in the war against Sweden and the war against Muscovy. He also helped defend his land during the Zebrzydowski rebellion. Sometimes, his work was very difficult because of money problems. The Sejm, which was the parliament, often failed to provide enough funds. This meant the soldiers were not always paid. Because of this, Chodkiewicz often used his own wealth to help his troops. He even used his own money to pay for military expenses.

In his later years, he faced a very large challenge in the south.

An army of 160,000 Turks and 60,000 Tatars moved toward the frontier. Chodkiewicz led a force of about 70,000 men to stop them. He went to the Khotyn Fortress to set up a defense. He stayed there and resisted the large army for a whole month. Sadly, Chodkiewicz was very sick during this campaign. He died at the fortress on September 24, 1621. This was just a few days before the siege ended.

Today, people still remember Chodkiewicz as a great military genius.

He is often described as having an iron will. This means he was very determined and strong in his decisions. Many historians study his life to learn about the "Great Hetman era." In 2021, people held many ceremonies to mark 400 years since his death. A new gold medal was even named after him in Lithuania. His name lives on through monuments and the military units named in his honor.
