The Great Turkish War was a massive series of conflicts in Europe. It lasted from 1683 until 1699. The war pitted the Ottoman Empire against a group called the Holy League. This alliance included the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It also included the Venetian Republic and Russia.

Some historians refer to this struggle as the Fourteenth Crusade. The war fundamentally changed the balance of power in Eastern Europe. It marked a period where the Ottoman Empire began to lose significant territory.

The conflict began with a major siege at the city of Vienna. In 1683, the Ottoman army arrived to surround the city. The defense was led by Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg. He commanded 15,000 troops and 8,700 volunteers.

The Ottomans used sappers to blow up parts of the city walls. These explosions created gaps about 12 meters wide. To defend the city, Viennese workers dug tunnels to stop Ottoman gunpowder. On September 6, King John III Sobieski of Poland arrived to help. He led a force of 70,000 to 80,000 soldiers.

This relief force included the famous Polish hussars. Their victory at Vienna stopped the Ottoman expansion into central Europe.

After the victory at Vienna, the Holy League organized more formal efforts. Pope Innocent XI helped initiate a new Holy League in 1684. This group included the Holy Roman Empire, Poland-Lithuania, and Venice. Russia joined the alliance in 1686.

This was a historic moment because it was the first time Russia joined an alliance with Western European powers. One major success occurred in 1686 when the League captured the city of Buda.

The Ottomans also suffered a major defeat at the second battle of Mohács in 1687. However, the war was not a simple series of victories for the League.

The war was complicated by other conflicts happening at the same time. The Nine Years' War began in 1688 and involved France. France did not join the Holy League. Instead, France fought against the Grand Alliance, which included the Dutch Republic and England. This second war drew many resources away from the fight against the Ottomans. In 1695, the Holy Roman Empire had 280,000 troops in the field. However, only 74,000 of those men were fighting the Turks. The rest were busy fighting France. This diversion of troops allowed the Ottomans to retake Belgrade in 1690.

Fighting also occurred in different regions across the Balkans. In the south, the Venetians fought the Ottomans. In the north, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth faced them. In the region of Kosovo, people like the bishop Pjetër Bogdani promoted resistance. He helped bring 6,000 Albanian soldiers to the Austrian army.

In the Pannonian Plain, many Serbs joined the Habsburgs as the Serbian Militia. These volunteers helped the Habsburg army capture several towns in 1688. Despite these local successes, the war eventually settled into a stalemate. Neither side could achieve a total victory through constant movement.

The turning point that led to peace was the Battle of Zenta in 1697. At this battle, the Holy League crushed an Ottoman attempt to retake Hungary. This decisive victory forced the Ottoman Empire to negotiate. In 1699, the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed to end the fighting.

The treaty resulted in massive territorial shifts. The Ottoman Empire ceded most of Hungary, Transylvania, and Slavonia to the Habsburg monarchy. They also gave parts of Croatia to the Habsburgs. Poland regained the territory of Podolia. Venice took control of much of Dalmatia and the Morea.

The Great Turkish War had lasting effects on European politics and borders. It showed that the Ottoman Empire could be defeated in large-scale warfare. The war also established Russia as a player in European alliances. The shifting borders created new political realities in the Balkans and Central Europe. The conflict demonstrated how interconnected European wars had become. A battle in the east could be affected by a war in the west. This era of fighting helped shape the modern map of the continent.
