The Congress of Berlin was a major meeting to fix problems in Europe. In 1878, many powerful nations met to decide how to share land. This meeting was very important for the area known as the Balkans.

The leaders wanted to stop a war from starting. They also wanted to balance the power between different strong lands. Without this meeting, the tension might have turned into a huge fight right away.

To understand the meeting, we must look at what happened before. Russia and the Ottoman Empire had just finished a war. Russia won and created a large state called Greater Bulgaria.

This made other countries like Britain very worried. Britain did not want Russia to have too much control in the region. They sent ships to the Mediterranean to show their strength. The leaders needed a new plan to keep everyone calm.

Otto von Bismarck led the meeting in his home country, Germany. He was the Chancellor of the new German Empire.

The meeting took place at his Reich Chancellery from June 13 to July 13, 1878. Six great powers attended the talks. These were Russia, Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Germany. The Ottoman Empire was also there. Representatives from Greece, Serbia, Romania, and Montenegro joined to discuss their own lands.

Many borders changed because of the new Treaty of Berlin. Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro were officially recognized as independent states.

However, things were not simple for everyone. Austria-Hungary took control of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Britain took possession of Cyprus. Bulgaria was made smaller than it was before. Some lands were given to Russia, while others were returned to the Ottomans. Bismarck even helped secure civil rights for Jewish people in these new states.

While the meeting stopped a war for a short time, it caused new problems. Many people felt the new borders were unfair. Russia felt humiliated because they did not get the rewards they expected. The Ottoman Empire felt weak and insulted. These angry feelings lasted for a long time in the Balkans. This tension eventually led to the Balkan Wars and even World War I in 1914. The meeting changed the map of Europe forever.
