This happened after Napoleon won a big battle called the Battle of Austerlitz. The previous king, Ferdinand IV, had to leave his kingdom. He wanted to bring good changes to his people. He built new highways, including a road in Calabria. He also started a system of street lights in Naples. This was just like the lights used in Paris. Joseph set up schools for young girls in every province. He also helped the poor by creating new jobs. He even doubled the money the crown made during his two years.

In 1808, Joseph became the King of Spain.

This was a much harder job for him. Many people in Spain did not want a foreign king. They started a large revolt against the French rule. Some people even made mean drawings of him. They falsely said he drank too much alcohol. This conflict became part of the Peninsular War. It was a very difficult time for Joseph in Spain.
