Titus Larcius was a very important leader in early Rome. He belonged to the Larcii family. This was an Etruscan family living in Rome. His brother, Spurius Larcius, was also a famous hero. Spurius helped defend a wooden bridge over the Tiber river. Titus lived a long time ago, around 501 to 493 BC. He was a general and a statesman.

Rome had special jobs for its leaders. One job was called a consul. Titus served as a consul two different times. His first time was in 501 BC. His second time was in 498 BC. During his first term, Rome faced many hard jobs. Some young Sabines caused trouble in the city. Also, the Latin towns might start a war.

To keep the city safe, Rome created a new role. This role was called a dictator. A dictator was also called a master of the infantry. This leader had total power to protect Rome. The job only lasted for six months. The Senate told the consuls to pick a dictator. In 501 BC, the consul Postumus Cominius Auruncus picked Titus. Titus then picked Spurius Cassius to be his master of the horse.

As the first dictator, Titus did many things. He talked to Latin towns to make peace. He also ran the elections for new leaders. He even held the census to count the people. In 498 BC, he was consul again with Quintus Cloelius Siculus. During that year, he captured the town of Fidenae. Later, he helped talk to the plebs. These were the common people who were upset about debt.

Titus helped make important changes in Rome. His talks with the people led to new leaders. These new leaders were called tribunes of the people. This helped the people have a voice. His life is still known in stories today. The writer William Shakespeare even used him in a play. This play was called Coriolanus. It shows how people remember great leaders from the past.
