His family was of equestrian status, which meant they were part of a certain social class. His father died before he grew up. His mother, Rhea, worked hard to give him a great education. Because of this, he moved to Rome to study law. He also practiced public speaking. His style of speaking was blunt but very effective.

Sertorius began his career in the military. He showed great courage during the Cimbrian War. In 105 BC, he fought at the Battle of Arausio. After losing that battle, he escaped by swimming across the Rhone River. He even kept his weapons and armor while he swam.

Later, he served under the famous leader Gaius Marius. He learned how to watch enemy movements and report them. He fought in several important battles against Germanic tribes. These early years taught him many ways to lead soldiers.

Sertorius eventually traveled to the land of Hispania.

While serving there, he learned a special way to fight. This is called guerrilla warfare. It uses small, quick attacks instead of one huge battle. He also learned how to work with local tribes. In the town of Castulo, he showed how bold he could be. These experiences helped him prepare for his own great rebellion. He knew how to use the land to his advantage.

Later, Sertorius led a massive revolt against the Roman Senate. He did not agree with the leader Sulla.

Sertorius went to Hispania and gathered many followers. He led many people who had been forced out of Rome. To gain support, he said the gods helped him. He even kept a pet white fawn to show this.

At his strongest, he controlled almost all of Hispania. He fought against powerful Roman generals like Pompey.

Even though he was a strong leader, things became difficult. He fought the Battle of Lauron in 76 BC against Pompey. He won that battle, but he faced many setbacks later. His own followers began to lose faith in him. In 73 or 72 BC, his lieutenant Marcus Perperna Veiento killed him.

After he died, Pompey finished the war. Many years later, the writer Plutarch wrote about his life. He included Sertorius in his famous book called Parallel Lives.
