In the Roman Republic, many people lived as slaves.

These people were not free. They worked very hard in mines and on large farms. Some were even trained to fight in games for crowds.

Under Roman law, slaves were treated like property. This meant owners could hurt them without any legal trouble. Because life was so hard, many people wanted to escape. This led to several rebellions over many years.

The most famous revolt began in 73 BCE. It started at a gladiator school in a place called Capua.

About 70 gladiators escaped from the school. They did not have swords at first. Instead, they used kitchen tools like spits and choppers. They fought their way out and took real weapons. A man named Spartacus became one of their leaders. He was joined by other leaders named Crixus and Oenomaus.

This small group grew into a massive army. Within two years, about 120,000 men, women, and children joined them.

They were very good at fighting. They defeated local Roman patrols and even trained soldiers. Once, they were trapped on Mount Vesuvius. A Roman leader named Gaius Claudius Glaber tried to starve them out. The rebels used vines to make ropes. They climbed down the steep cliffs to surprise the Roman army. They won that battle and grew even stronger.

Rome became very worried about this large group. The Roman Senate saw that their military was struggling.

Eventually, Rome sent a leader named Marcus Licinius Crassus. He led eight large groups of soldiers called legions. In 71 BCE, Crassus fought the rebels in a final battle. The rebels fought hard, but they were defeated.

After the battle, some 6,000 survivors were punished along the Appian Way.

This war changed the history of Rome forever.

The leaders, Pompey and Crassus, used their success to gain power. They used their fame to help win elections in 70 BCE. This helped change the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. While some say the rebels just wanted to reach freedom in Gaul, others say they wanted to take Rome. Either way, the Third Servile War was a major event that shaped the world.
