He lived from 67 BC to 35 BC. His father was a great general named Pompey the Great. Sextus spent much of his life fighting for his father's cause. He fought against Julius Caesar and his supporters. When the civil war began in 49 BC, Sextus stayed in Rome. He was cared for by his stepmother, Cornelia Metella. Later, he joined his father in Egypt. It was there that Sextus saw his father killed in 47 BC. After that, he joined other leaders to resist Julius Caesar. He fought in Africa and even in Spain.

Sextus eventually found a place to build his own power.

He escaped to the island of Sicily. There, he created an independent state that lasted for several years. He built a very strong navy with Sicilian marines. This navy allowed him to control the seas around him. He even used his ships to block food from reaching Italy. This made him a very important person to watch.

In 39 BC, Sextus signed a peace treaty called the Pact of Misenum.

This deal gave him control over Sicily and Sardinia. He promised to keep the grain supply open to Rome. He also promised to stop pirates from causing trouble. However, the peace did not last very long. Octavian, a leader in Rome, soon started fighting him again. The two sides accused each other of breaking the rules.

Finally, the fighting reached a turning point in 36 BC.
