He lived from 67 BC to 35 BC. He was the son of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, known as Pompey the Great. Sextus spent much of his life fighting to uphold his father's political cause. He stood against Julius Caesar and the supporters of the Roman Republic. His actions helped form the last organized opposition to the Second Triumvirate. This group included leaders like Octavian and Mark Antony.

Sextus grew up in the shadow of a very famous father. His father was a great general and a powerful politician. When Julius Caesar started a civil war in 49 BC, Sextus stayed in Rome. He was cared for by his stepmother, Cornelia Metella. Later, Sextus traveled to Egypt to find his father. It was there that he witnessed his father's death in 47 BC. This loss shaped his later decisions to resist Caesar's heirs.

After his father died, Sextus joined the resistance in Africa. He worked with other senators like Cato the Younger and Metellus Scipio. They tried to oppose Caesar's growing power. In 45 BC, Caesar defeated the Pompeius brothers at the Battle of Munda. This battle took place in Hispania, which is modern Spain and Portugal. Caesar described this as his hardest fought victory. Although his brother Gnaeus died, Sextus managed to escape to Sicily.

Sicily became the center of Sextus's power for several years.

He established an independent state on the island. He built a powerful navy using Sicilian marines. This fleet allowed him to control the Mediterranean Sea. He even used his ships to create a blockade around Italy. This blockade prevented food from reaching the Italian peninsula. This tactic made him a major threat to the leaders in Rome.

In 39 BC, a temporary peace was reached through the Pact of Misenum.

This agreement was made between Sextus and the Triumvirs. Under the pact, Sextus gained legitimate control over Sicily and Sardinia. In exchange, he promised to keep the grain supply open to Rome. He also agreed to keep pirates in check. Some historians believe Octavian used this treaty to trick Sextus. Octavian wanted to secure the West before fighting the Parthian Empire.

Peace did not last because the two sides accused each other of breaking rules.

The conflict intensified after the betrayal of Sardinia by a man named Menas. Octavian turned to his talented general, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, for help. Agrippa built a brand new fleet near Lake Avernus from scratch. In 36 BC, Agrippa fought Sextus at the Battle of Mylae. Later that year, the decisive Battle of Naulochus took place. Agrippa's forces destroyed the remainder of Sextus's navy.

Without his fleet, Sextus lost his base of support in Sicily. He fled to Asia Minor to escape his enemies. In 35 BC, he was captured in the city of Miletus.

He was executed without a trial by Marcus Titius. Titius was a man whom Sextus had once spared in the past. Although Octavian later claimed the execution was illegal, he had previously declared Sextus an outlaw. This ended the long struggle of the Pompeian family.

Sextus Pompey remains a central figure in the history of Rome's fall. Some historians, like Appian, suggest he could have been a major victor. They believe he might have started a dynasty of his own. His life shows the intense struggles of the Roman Republic. He was a leader who used the sea to challenge the power of Rome. His story is one of resistance, naval strength, and the shifting tides of political power.
