This idea grew in Europe and the United States. It became very big in the 20th century. In the past, people bought things for basic needs. Now, buying things is part of our culture. It helps people show who they are.

Long ago, luxury goods like sugar and tea were rare. In the 1700s, more people began to buy them. A man named Josiah Wedgwood made famous pottery. He used new ways to make people want his goods. Later, the Industrial Revolution changed everything. Factories could make many items very fast. These items were cheap so many people could buy them.

Television also helped consumerism grow. Ads on TV show us new products. They can make us want to upgrade what we own. However, some people worry about this. Buying too much can create a lot of waste. It can also use up natural resources. Some people choose simple living to help the planet.
