Consumer

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A consumer is a person or a group of people. They buy goods or services for their own needs. These needs include personal, family, or household tasks. A consumer does not buy things to sell them again. They are not part of a business or a company.

This role is very important for any economy. In a capitalist system, consumers are a fundamental part. They form one end of the chain of distribution.

Economics is the study of how things are made and used. This includes production, distribution, and consumption. People work, hunt, or trade to get what they need. They do this so they and their families can eat. Without consumer demand, producers would have no reason to work. They need to sell things to consumers to stay in business.

Consumers pay money to use up these goods or services.

Many years ago, a leader helped define consumer rights. President John F. Kennedy spoke to the United States Congress. This happened on March 15, 1962. He said that consumers include all of us. This speech led to World Consumer Rights Day. People now celebrate this day every March 15.

His words helped create laws to protect people.

Kennedy outlined several important rights for every consumer. One is the right to safety from dangerous goods. Another is the right to be informed with true facts. This helps you make a good choice. You also have the right to choose between different products. If a product causes damage, you have the right to seek redressal. This means you can ask for compensation for harm.

In India, the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 helps people too.

Today, the internet is changing how we shop. Some people are now called prosumers. A prosumer is someone who is both a consumer and a producer. They might make media or information on the social web. They can use crowdfunding to help create new products. They can also share their own preferences to influence makers.

This makes the role of the consumer even more active.
