Shopping

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Shopping is a very common activity for people today. It is when a customer looks at goods or services from a retailer. A retailer is a business that sells things for money. Some people shop because they need items for daily life. Other people are recreational shoppers. This means they shop because they enjoy it as a hobby.

In the past, shopping worked in a very different way. People often went to local markets or large fairs to find things. In ancient Greece, people visited a marketplace called an agora.

Ancient Rome also used marketplaces called forums. One famous place was Trajan's Market, built around 100 to 110 CE. It was a huge area with many buildings. It even had retail shops on four different levels.

During the Middle Ages, shopping was often seen as a chore. In early medieval Britain, people mostly grew their own food. Later, they went to markets for meat, fish, or fresh produce. Most shops were not permanent buildings in small towns. Instead, people went to a tradesman's workshop to talk about buying things.

Some sellers, called peddlers, would even bring goods directly to homes. These shops were often dark and had no glass windows. You had to ask a worker to bring items out from the back.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, shopping began to change into a pleasure. A new middle class emerged in Europe with extra money to spend. They bought luxury goods like silk, tea, and porcelain from China.

In 1609, Robert Cecil opened The New Exchange in London. This was one of the first planned shopping centres. People began to use shops to meet and socialize. New glass windows allowed for window shopping, which is looking without buying.
