It looks at how individuals, groups, or even large organizations act when they buy things. This study explores how our emotions and attitudes change the way we shop. It also looks at how things we see, hear, or touch can shape our choices.

Researchers want to know why we pick one brand over another. They also study how we use products and how we eventually throw them away.

Making a purchase is a process that happens in many different ways. Some people spend a long time searching for information before they buy something. They might compare many different options to find the best one. Other people make impulse buys that happen almost instantly. These quick choices often happen without much thought or effort.

Sometimes, people buy things because they are in a habit. Other times, they buy things because they lack the time to research. These different patterns help experts understand how people spend their money.

Before this, marketing mostly relied on simple descriptions and case studies. By the end of the 1950s, experts wanted to use more scientific methods. They began to use ideas from psychology, sociology, and anthropology. This shift helped them see the customer as the most important part of the study. It allowed them to learn about things like brand loyalty and how groups influence us.

People often make decisions together in groups like families or businesses.

In a family, different members play different roles during a purchase. An initiator might suggest a new product for the house. An influencer might recommend a specific brand to the group. The decider is the person who makes the final choice. Then, the purchaser is the one who actually pays for the item. Even children can be powerful influencers through something called pester power.

Today, researchers use very advanced tools to study these complex patterns.

They use big data and machine learning to look at huge amounts of information. Some scientists even use consumer neuroscience to study the brain. This can help them see how people react to things on a subconscious level. They also use ethnography to watch how people live and shop in real life. These modern methods help businesses create more personal ways to reach their customers.
