Sociological theory

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Sociological theory is a way to study and explain how people live together. It helps experts organize what they know about the social world. These theories can be very small or very large. Some explain just one single thing that happens in a group. Other theories are broad frameworks that guide many different studies. Some theories even help people predict what might happen in the future.

There are different ways to use these ideas. One way is called sociological theory. This method uses the scientific method to stay objective. It tries to look at facts without using personal opinions. Another way is called social theory. Social theory is often more about commentary or critique of modern life. It is closer to philosophy and often shares personal judgments. Some thinkers, like Robert K. Merton, look for a middle ground. He focused on social mechanisms to explain how society works.

This field of study is relatively new. It began to grow during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, the world was changing very quickly. People saw the rise of big cities and new industries. They also saw the start of democracy and early capitalism. These big changes made thinkers want to understand society better. Randall Collins later grouped these ideas into four main traditions. These include functionalism, conflict, symbolic interactionism, and utilitarianism.

One major tradition is called structural functionalism. This idea says society works like a living body. People use an "organic analogy" to explain this. They see social rules and groups as organs in a body. Each part has a job to keep the whole system healthy. This idea was used by thinkers like Auguste Comte and Émile Durkheim. Other experts like Bronisław Malinowski also studied these structures.

Another important view is conflict theory. This theory looks at why fights or struggles happen in society. It says conflict comes from people having unequal power or resources. Karl Marx is often called the father of this theory. He looked at the struggle between owners and workers. Max Weber also studied how class and status cause conflict. Other important names include W. E. B. Du Bois and Jane Addams. Finally, symbolic interactionism looks at small, daily actions. George Herbert Mead helped develop this idea. It says society is built by how individuals interact every day.
