Social reality

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Social reality is how groups of people see the world together. It is different from the physical world. The physical world is made of things like rocks or trees. Social reality is made of ideas that a community accepts. These ideas include things like laws and social rules. It is not just about one person's thoughts. Instead, it is created when people interact with each other. This makes social reality something that goes beyond just one person's actions.

This social world works in a special way. Some parts of it can be experienced directly. Other parts are harder to see right away. You might have to look for them to understand them. Think about how people act in a group. They follow rules that everyone else agrees on. These rules help people know how to behave. This creates a structure for how we live our lives every day.

Many thinkers have studied these ideas over a long time. Herbert Spencer used the term "super-organic" in 1876. He wanted to show that social reality is above our bodies. Émile Durkheim said that in the social world, ideas are the real thing. Alfred Schütz also studied the social world. He looked at how we experience it. These thinkers helped us understand how society stays organized.

John Searle is another important thinker on this topic. He says that language is the key to social reality. We use words to agree on things like marriage or property. We also use words for things like taxes, laws, and governments. He says these facts stay the same over time. They do not change just because one person changes their mind. These things work together in layers to build our world.

Learning about social reality is part of growing up. Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan studied how children join society. They looked at how children learn the rules of their culture. This process helps a child understand the world around them. Trust is also a very important part of this. Francis Fukuyama says trust is like "social capital." It is a way for a community to stay strong and work together.
