This identity can be a part of how someone describes themselves. Some women feel this way all the time. Other women might feel their feelings change over time.

People often use symbols to show their pride and connection. One common symbol is two female signs joined together. This is also known as the Venus symbol. It is used by many feminist and lesbian groups. It represents the sisterhood of women and their shared bonds.

There are many ways people show their identity today. Some use special flags to show who they are.

The labrys is used to show lesbian strength. Some people also use the term queer to describe themselves. Others might use the word bisexual. Every person chooses the words that feel right for them. These labels help people find community and group pride.

The word "lesbian" has a very long history. It comes from the Greek island of Lesbos.

A famous poet named Sappho lived there in the 6th century BCE. She wrote beautiful poems about her love for other women. Before the middle of the 1800s, the word meant many things. It could even describe a type of wine from the island. By 1870, the word began to describe romantic feelings between women. In 1890, it was used in medical books as well. By 1925, it was used as a noun to describe a person.

History shows that women have always had these feelings. In ancient Greece, Sappho's poems gave us early clues.
