LGBTQ people are a group of people with many different identities. These identities involve how people feel about gender and who they are attracted to. The letters in the name stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. The letter Q can stand for queer or questioning. Other people in this group include asexual, aromantic, and agender people. Some people also include intersex people in these groups.

People often use different versions of the name, like LGBT or LGBTQIA+. These names help show that the group includes many different kinds of people.

Many people feel they belong to the LGBTQ community. This community can be built around shared culture or living in the same place. Some people live in special neighborhoods, like Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

Others join student groups at schools or religious groups. There are also many social movements that work for equality. These movements help people find support and fight against unfair treatment. Not every LGBTQ person feels they are part of this community, though.

History shows that these identities have existed around the world for a long time. In many cultures, people with these identities faced hard times and were treated unfairly. Because of this, many of these stories were not told in history books for a long time. Now, people are working to include these stories in mainstream history. In the United States, people observe LGBT History Month every October.

In the United Kingdom, they observe it in February. This month includes National Coming Out Day on October 11.

Laws about rights for LGBTQ people are different in every country. Some places have laws that protect people from hate and violence. Other places have laws that allow same-sex marriage or adoption. In 2001, Queen Beatrix signed a law in the Netherlands. This made it the first country to legalize same-sex marriage.

Later, in 2015, Ireland became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by a popular vote. Some countries still have very different or unfair laws.

Culture for this group includes many fun and important events. People hold pride parades to show their pride.

There are also events like the Gay Games. Many artists create works that celebrate queer identities. You might also see businesses that are owned by LGBTQ people. These businesses often serve the community specifically. Some groups even use art to critique how culture changes over time. This culture helps people feel seen and understood in the world.
