LGBTQ movements are social groups that work for fairness and inclusion. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. These groups advocate for the rights of people with different sexual orientations or gender identities.

They have many important goals. Some groups want to change unfair laws about relationships. Others fight for protections against being treated poorly in public. Many activists also work for access to gender-affirming healthcare.

Activists use many different ways to reach their goals. Some people use political lobbying to talk to government leaders. Others organize street marches and loud protests to show their strength. Some groups focus on mutual aid to help their own community members. Many people also use art and academic research to share their stories.

These movements can also have disagreements inside them. People sometimes debate the best ways to act or who should speak for everyone. There are also discussions about how to best include every identity.

Earlier, a man named Jeremy Bentham wrote about law reform in England around 1785. He believed that laws should focus on human well-being. He argued that certain behaviors were not crimes because they did not harm anyone. In 1791, France became the first nation to decriminalize homosexuality. This happened partly because of the Napoleonic Code.

Many different people have led these movements over the years. William Dorsey Swann was an important person in the United States. He was born enslaved in Maryland and organized drag balls in Washington, D.C.
