The sexual revolution was a major social movement in the Western world. It lasted from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. During this time, people challenged old rules about relationships and behavior. Many people wanted more freedom in their personal lives. They sought to move away from strict traditional codes. This movement led to new ways of thinking about love and sex.

Several big changes helped this movement grow. In 1960, the birth control pill became available to many women. This gave people more choices about starting families. Better medicine also helped make things safer. For example, penicillin helped treat certain diseases. Improvements in medicine also meant fewer women died during childbirth. These scientific steps made it easier for people to change their habits.

History shows that sexual norms have changed many times before. Some scholars call the shifts in Ancient Rome a "first sexual revolution." During that time, Roman rules were replaced by Christian rules. Another period was the Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s. In the 1920s, the "Roaring Twenties" also saw big shifts in behavior. The term "sexual revolution" was used as early as 1929. Even in 1925, the term appeared in Soviet Russia.

Many researchers and thinkers helped change how people thought. Sigmund Freud studied how unconscious drives affect human behavior. Alfred Kinsey conducted huge studies on how Americans actually acted. He published books on men in 1948 and women in 1953. Margaret Mead studied how teenagers grew up in Samoa. These studies showed that people's lives were often different from old rules. Their work brought more public attention to human sexuality.

By the 1970s, society looked very different than it did before. Divorce rates went up and marriage rates began to fall. In the United States, the number of unmarried young adults grew quickly. In 1960, there were 4.3 million unmarried people aged twenty to twenty-four. By 1976, that number rose to 9.7 million. This era also helped lead to new rights for LGBTQ+ people. These changes helped shape the modern world we live in today.
