The New Left was a large political movement. It grew during the 1960s and 1970s. This movement included many activists in the Western world. They wanted to change how society worked. They focused on social issues like feminism and gay rights. They also cared about gender relations and drug policy reforms.

Unlike the "Old Left," they did not just focus on money or jobs. They wanted social justice for many different groups. Some people saw this as a new way to follow old ideas. Others saw it as a totally new path.

Many people joined the movement to fight for their beliefs. In the United States, college students were very important. One major group was the Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS. They wanted more democracy and civil rights. They also protested the Vietnam War.

Some groups, like the Diggers, even gave things away for free. They gave out food, music, and clothes to help people. This was part of their way of living.

The movement had many important thinkers and leaders. Herbert Marcuse is often called the "Father of the New Left."

He believed that students and Black Power movements could change the world. Another important person was C. Wright Mills. He helped make the term "New Left" popular in 1960. In the United Kingdom, E. P. Thompson and John Saville were key figures. They started a journal called The New Reasoner in 1957. This helped spread new political ideas.

Different places had their own unique versions of the movement. In the United States, the Free Speech Movement happened at UC Berkeley. Students there fought for the right to speak freely on campus.

In the United Kingdom, the New Left Review began in 1960. It helped people learn about new ways of thinking. In France, the term was used even earlier in the 1950s. The movement also included groups like the Black Panther Party. These groups had different goals and methods for making change.

Eventually, the New Left began to fade away. This happened after the Vietnam War ended. Some parts of the movement faced hard times. The U.S. government used groups like the FBI to cause trouble within these groups. This made it harder for them to work together. One very sad event was the 1969 death of Fred Hampton. He was a leader of the Black Panther Party in Chicago. Despite these struggles, the ideas of the New Left changed how people think about society today.
