It started in Oakland, California, during the 1960s. The group wanted to help Black people gain power. They wanted to fix unfair treatment in cities. Many Black families had moved to places like Oakland for work. They often lived in poor areas with bad housing. The group fought for better schools and jobs for everyone.

The party did many things to help their community. They ran programs to give free breakfast to children.

They also wanted people to have control over their own schools. Members made a newspaper to share news with the people. At its highest point, the paper sold 100,000 copies every week.

This helped people stay informed about what was happening around them.

Two college students founded the group in October 1966.

Their names were Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. They met while studying at Merritt College. They wanted to protect people from police misconduct. They even sold books to raise money for guns. This helped them start patrols to watch the police in Oakland. They wore black berets and leather jackets as their uniform.

The group grew very large in many different cities. Between 1968 and 1971, they had chapters in many places. These included New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. They even had groups in the United Kingdom and Algeria. However, the government tried to stop them. J. Edgar Hoover led the FBI to watch the group closely.

He called them a big threat to the country's security.

The FBI used a secret program called COINTELPRO to hurt the party. This program used spying and harassment to cause trouble. It caused many fights inside the group. Because of these fights and government pressure, the party grew smaller. Some people saw them as a political force for change. Others focused on their conflicts with the police. Today, people still study their history to understand these big changes.
