Effeminacy

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Effeminacy is when boys or men act in ways seen as feminine. This can include their clothes, behaviors, or how they look.

These traits are often linked to girls or women by society. For a long time, people have treated men this way with unfairness.

In ancient Greece, some leaders used these ideas to attack others. They might call a man's clothes "womanish" to make him look weak. In ancient Rome, things like perfume or shaved skin were seen as effeminate.

Romans also thought men should show great self-control when they are in pain.

In China, the government made a rule in 2021. They told TV stations to stop showing "sissy men" in ads. In the United States, many gay men felt they had to act more masculine to fit in. This changed after the Stonewall riots.

Today, some people use the word "femboy." This is a mix of the words feminine and boy. Femboy is a term used online to describe boys who wear skirts or dresses. Some use it to describe themselves in a positive way.
