Pink is a pale shade of red. It gets its name from flowers called pinks. These plants belong to the Dianthus family. The name comes from the frilled edges of the flowers.

You can see pink in the sky. This happens during sunrise and sunset. Sunlight travels through the air to reach your eyes. Air particles scatter blue and green light away. This leaves the longer red and pink light behind. This is called Rayleigh scattering.

In nature, flowers use pink to attract birds and insects. This helps with pollination. The color comes from natural parts called anthocyanins. These same parts make raspberries look pink too.

People have different ideas about pink. In the 1800s, many people thought pink was for boys. It was seen as a lighter version of red. Today, many people see pink as a color for girls. This change happened mostly in the mid-1900s. The famous doll Barbie helped make this idea common.
