This term usually describes a child or an adolescent. When a male reaches adulthood, he is typically called a man. The word "boy" has very old roots. It comes from Middle English words like "boi" or "boye." These words might even come from an older term meaning "little brother."

Exploring these old words helps us see how people have talked about young males for a long time.

Biology explains how a boy begins to grow. It all starts with tiny parts called chromosomes.

When a sperm cell joins an egg, it carries one chromosome. If the sperm has an X chromosome, the baby is usually a girl. If the sperm has a Y chromosome, the baby is usually a boy. This happens right at the very start of life.

Inside the mother, a gene on the Y chromosome helps the body develop testes. Around nine weeks, the body begins making testosterone to build the male reproductive system.

Growing up involves a big change called puberty. This is the way a child's body matures into an adult body.

Most boys start this process between ages 11 and 12. They usually finish around ages 16 or 17. During this time, the hormone testosterone causes many physical changes. A boy's muscles grow larger and his bones get longer. His voice will also deepen as his larynx grows. He will grow hair on his face, chest, and other parts of his body.

Boys also grow through social changes. Many boys belong to groups with their own sets of rules. These rules are called group norms. Boys often try to follow these norms to fit in with their peers. Following these rules can be a way to feel part of a circle. However, boys who do not follow these norms may face hard times. They might feel more stress or face social stigma from others.

These social rules can shape how a boy acts as he grows.

In some parts of the world, boys do much of the work in jobs. This is often called child labor.

Around the world, 88 million child laborers are boys. This is more than the 64 million girls who work. Boys often work in places like farms, construction sites, or mines. In the United States, boys made up about 87 percent of children who died on the job between 2003 and 2016. Many boys learn basic skills and then follow their father's job to help their families.
