Understanding the biological and social development of boys helps us see how they grow into adults. This process involves complex genetics, physical changes, and social influences.

Biological sex is determined at the moment of fertilization. This happens when a sperm cell joins an egg to create a zygote.

The sex of the fetus depends on the specific chromosome carried by the sperm. If the sperm contains an X chromosome, the fetus will typically be female with XX chromosomes. If the sperm carries a Y chromosome, the fetus will typically be a boy with XY chromosomes. Some variations in this process can result in intersex fetuses.

Inside the womb, the body begins to develop specific organs. At six to seven weeks of gestation, a gene on the Y chromosome triggers changes. These changes lead to the development of the testes.

By approximately nine weeks, the embryo begins producing testosterone. This hormone drives the development of the male reproductive system. This system includes internal organs like the vas deferens and the prostate gland. It also includes external organs like the penis, the scrotum, and the testicles.

Puberty is the stage where a boy's body matures into an adult body. Most boys begin this process between ages 11 and 12. They usually complete it by ages 16 or 17.

Puberty begins with the enlargement of the testicles and the scrotum. The testicles start making sperm, and the penis increases in size. A major milestone is the first ejaculation, which occurs on average at age 13. Sometimes, ejaculation happens during sleep, which is known as a nocturnal emission.

During puberty, the hormone testosterone triggers secondary sex characteristics. These are physical traits that distinguish adult males. A boy's muscles increase in mass and his bones lengthen. His larynx, or voice box, enlarges, which causes his voice to deepen.

Other changes include the growth of facial, chest, and body hair. Boys also experience increased oil and sweat gland secretions. On average, adult males also have a taller stature and broader shoulders than females.

Socially, boys often navigate complex group norms. These are unwritten rules that members of a social circle follow. Boys often use these norms as a benchmark to assess their peers. Many boys feel a strong pressure to conform to these rules to fit in.

However, those who do not follow these gender norms may face challenges. They might experience social stigma, anxiety, or depression. In some cultures, the birth of a boy is even viewed as a sign of prosperity.

In many parts of the world, boys are heavily involved in child labor. There are approximately 88 million boy child laborers globally. This is a higher number than the 64 million girls in child labor.

Boys are often the primary victims of hazardous work in mining, construction, and agriculture. In the United States, boys accounted for about 87 percent of child work deaths between 2003 and 2016. Many boys are taught basic skills and then follow their father's profession to help their families.
