A woman is an adult female human. Before reaching adulthood, a female child or adolescent is referred to as a girl.

Biologically, women are distinguished by specific genetic and anatomical traits. Most women inherit a pair of X chromosomes, receiving one from each parent. This genetic makeup is a primary driver of female development. Some women are intersex, meaning they possess unusual sex characteristics. These may include atypical chromosomes, genitalia, or internal sex organs. Examples include conditions like trisomy X or vaginal atresia.

The female reproductive system is a complex network of organs. It includes the ovaries, which are glands that produce female gametes called ova. The fallopian tubes serve as tubular structures to transport these egg cells. The uterus is an organ designed to protect and nurture a developing foetus. The cervix helps to expel the foetus during birth. The vagina and the vulva, which is the external genitalia, also form part of this system.

Humans are placental mammals. This means a mother carries the foetus in the uterus. A placenta facilitates the exchange of nutrients and waste between the mother and the foetus. This process supports the development of the offspring.

Biological changes occur through a process called puberty. This process is triggered by chemical signals from the pituitary gland. In response, the ovaries secrete hormones, primarily oestrogens. These hormones drive the development of secondary sexual characteristics. These include breast development and the widening of the hips. Oestrogen also influences overall body shape. During puberty, a girl typically experiences menarche, which is the onset of menstruation. This usually occurs between the ages of 12 and 13. Menstruation is a monthly cycle where the lining of the uterus is shed. This tissue and blood exit the body through the vagina.

Women also possess distinct physiological and morphological traits. Generally, women have a wider pelvis and broader hips to facilitate pregnancy and childbirth. They often have larger breasts and a higher body fat composition than men. Women typically have less facial and body hair. On average, women are shorter and less muscular than men. Their circulatory systems also show differences. A woman's normal haematocrit level, or the volume of red blood cells, is between 36% and 48%. This is lower than the typical range for men. Additionally, women's hearts often have finer-grained muscle textures. Research suggests that women's hearts may age more slowly than men's hearts.

The history of the word "woman" shows how language evolves. In English, the spelling has changed over a millennium. It progressed from the Anglo-Saxon "wīfmann" to "wifman," then to "wumman," and finally to the modern "woman."

It is a common misconception that "woman" is etymologically linked to "womb." However, "womb" actually derives from the Old English word "wamb." The term "girl" has a different history. In Middle English, it meant a young person of either sex. It was not until the 16th century that it specifically meant a female child. In the 1970s, feminists challenged using "girl" to describe adult women.

Socially, the roles of women have undergone massive shifts. Throughout history, patriarchal gender roles often limited women's opportunities. Many societies imposed restrictions on women's education and careers. However, these restrictions began to loosen during the 20th century. This allowed women much wider access to professional fields and higher education.

Feminist movements emerged to fight for gender equality. These movements address issues like reproductive rights and legal rights. Some women still face challenges based on their sex. Violence against women is a serious issue, primarily committed by men. Despite these challenges, women continue to hold significant leadership roles globally.

Understanding the biological and social aspects of being a woman connects to many fields. In biology, it relates to genetics, endocrinology, and reproduction. In sociology, it involves studying gender roles and social construction. In history, it tracks the evolution of rights and language. Even in medicine, understanding female-specific health is vital. This includes managing menopause, which usually occurs between ages 49 and 52. Menopause is the permanent end of menstrual periods. It can involve symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats. By studying these various connections, we gain a fuller picture of the human experience.
