Adult

What does it mean to be an adult? For animals, it is a simple biological stage. An adult is a living thing that has reached full growth. This means the animal has reached sexual maturity. Being mature means the animal is now capable of reproduction. This is the base way we define an adult in science.

For humans, becoming an adult involves many different steps. One way is through puberty, which is the start of physical changes. Girls often begin this process at age 10 or 11. Boys usually start a bit later, around age 11 or 12. During this time, bodies change in many ways. Girls might experience a growth spurt or gain weight in certain areas. Boys also have growth spurts, but they happen differently. Genetics, food, and the environment all play a part in these changes.

History shows that the idea of adulthood has changed over time. In the past, people often moved from childhood to adulthood very quickly. Many cultures used special tests or ceremonies to mark this change. During the Industrial Revolution, children often went to work to help their families. They did not always focus on school or long periods of learning. Today, most modern societies use a specific age to decide adulthood. This is called the age of majority.

Laws set the age of majority, which is when a person is legally independent. Most people in the world become legal adults at age 18. However, this number changes depending on where you live. In Nigeria, Mali, and Cameroon, the age is 15. In South Korea, the age is 19. Some places in the United States, like Mississippi, use age 21. In Canada, many provinces like British Columbia use age 19.

Even after you reach the legal age, some rules still apply. In the United States, you must be 21 to buy tobacco or certain guns. The law also says you must be 21 to buy alcohol. This was done to help reduce accidents from drunk driving. Scientists also study how the brain grows. Some studies suggest the prefrontal cortex may not be fully mature until age 25. Other recent studies show this part of the brain grows well past age 30.
