An adult is an animal that has finished growing. In science, we call this being biologically mature. This means the animal can now have babies. For humans, being an adult is more complex. It involves your body, your brain, and the law.

Your body changes during puberty. This is a set of steps that makes you grow. Girls often start puberty at age 10 or 11. Boys often start at age 11 or 12. Things like food and your family history can change when this starts.

Laws also decide when you are an adult. This is called the age of majority. At this age, you are seen as independent. Most people become legal adults at age 18. However, this age changes by country. In some places, it is 15. In others, it is 19 or 21.

Even after you are 18, some rules stay the same. In the US, you must be 21 to buy tobacco. You might also need to be 21 to buy certain guns. Some studies show the brain keeps growing. One part of the brain may not be fully mature until age 25 or even 30.
