Coming of age

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Coming of age is a big change. It is the move from being a child to being an adult. This change happens in many ways. Some people use laws to mark the date. Others use special ceremonies or rituals.

In ancient Egypt, people often marked this change through marriage. For girls, it was linked to their first period. For boys, it meant being able to support a family. Many children learned a trade through an apprenticeship. This helped them prepare for adult work.

In ancient Rome, boys had special rites. They would shave their beards. They also took off a protective charm called a bulla. Then, they put on a toga, which is a special robe. This showed they were now citizens.

In the Sateré-Mawé tribe in Brazil, boys show their strength. They take part in the Bullet Ant Initiation. Boys wear gloves filled with stinging ants. They must wear them for 20 minutes. They do this many times to finish their training.
