Minor (law)

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A minor is a person under a certain age. Most laws use this word for people who are not yet adults. This age is called the age of majority. In many countries, the age of majority is 18. But rules can change depending on where you live.

In Thailand, a person is a minor until they are 20. In South Korea, the age is 19. In Canada, some places use age 18 and others use 19. In Italy and Mexico, the age is 18. Some laws also set different ages for specific tasks. In the United States, you can vote at 18. But you must be 21 to drink alcohol. This means some 18-year-olds are still called minors for those rules.

Sometimes, a young person can become an adult early. This is called emancipation. It can happen if they marry or join the military. In some places, it happens if they can support themselves. Laws help decide when a person has full rights. This includes things like signing contracts or driving large vehicles.
