Minor (law)

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A minor is a young person. Laws say when you are an adult. Many places use the age 18.

Rules can be different in each land. In Thailand, a person is a minor until age 20. In South Korea, they are a minor until age 19.

Some rules are about specific things. You might be an adult for some tasks but not others. For example, laws may set different ages for driving or voting.

In the United States, the age to vote is 18. But the age to drink is 21. This means some people are still called minors for those rules.

Some young people can become adults early. This is called emancipation. It can happen if they marry or join the military. Laws help guide how people grow up.
