language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Coming of age is the special time when a young person moves from childhood into adulthood. This change happens in many different ways across the world. Some societies use simple legal rules to mark this transition. Other cultures use spiritual events or grand rituals to celebrate the change. These moments can mean many things to the people involved. They might represent getting new legal rights or joining a larger community. Sometimes, these moments mark the start of marriage or new responsibilities.

In many places, the way people grow up depends on their culture. In ancient Egypt, marriage was a major sign of becoming an adult. For women, this was often linked to their first period. For men, it meant being able to support a family. Most children learned a job through an apprenticeship to prepare for work. Higher classes, like scribes or nobles, received a formal education. For these children, learning to read and write was a key part of growing up.

Ancient Rome had very specific ways to show someone was an adult. Young Roman men would shave their beards as part of a ritual. They also took off a protective charm called a bulla. After this, they put on a special robe known as a toga of manhood. This showed they were now citizens and ready for military service. For girls, marriage was a major rite of passage. Some girls would dedicate their dolls to goddesses like Artemis or Aphrodite.

Some traditions are very intense and test a person's strength. In the Sateré-Mawé tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, boys have a unique ceremony. They participate in the Bullet Ant Initiation at age 13. Boys find bullet ants and place them inside woven gloves. They must wear these gloves for 20 minutes to prove their manhood. They repeat this process 20 times over several months. During the test, they must not scream or cry.

Today, many countries use laws to decide when someone is an adult. In Canada, people are usually considered adults at age 18. In India, the age to vote or drive is 18. Many people also enjoy modern celebrations like "Sweet Sixteen" parties. Even people who are not religious sometimes have ceremonies. Humanist groups hold rites of passage to mark these life changes. These traditions help everyone feel the importance of growing up.
