Have you ever felt like you were stuck between two places?

This feeling of being in-between is called liminality. It describes a middle stage during a big change. In this state, a person has left their old way of life. However, they have not yet started their new way. It is like standing in a doorway. You are no longer in the old room, but you are not yet in the new one.

This period can feel very confusing or even disorienting.

Experts say these changes usually follow three specific steps. The first step is called a rite of separation. This is when someone leaves their old role or routine behind. Next comes the liminal stage, which is the middle part. During this time, people might feel nameless or lost. They often live outside their normal environment.

This stage follows a strict sequence. A leader, called a master of ceremonies, usually guides the process. This middle part is where a person's identity can truly change.

A man named Arnold van Gennep first studied this in 1909. He wrote a book called Rites de Passage. He found that these patterns happen in almost every culture. He noticed four main types of these social changes. One type is moving from being an outsider to an insider. Another is moving from one place to another, like a new city. You might also experience this when starting a new job. Even birthdays and New Year celebrations are types of these rites.

Later, a researcher named Victor Turner expanded on these ideas. He studied the Ndembu people in Zambia during his fieldwork. He discovered that liminality creates a special feeling called communitas. This is a sense of togetherness among people in the same situation. There are different kinds of this feeling. Spontaneous communitas is a sudden, deep connection between people. Ideological communitas tries to build a perfect society based on that feeling. Normative communitas uses laws to help keep those relationships going.

Today, people use the word liminality to describe many things. It can describe big changes in politics or culture. It can even describe feelings during a crisis or a great adventure. Some people see it as a time of uncertainty or fear. Others see it as a way to renew oneself. It is a time when the normal rules of society are paused. This pause allows for new customs and ideas to grow.
