In England, the job began a long time ago. The name comes from "shire reeve." These men worked for the king. They kept the peace and collected taxes. They even helped the king during wars.

Today, sheriffs do many different things. In Scotland, sheriffs are judges. They sit in courts and hear cases. They can even decide on jail time. In the United States, sheriffs are law officers. Most are elected by the people in their county. They police local areas and run county jails. They also help keep courts safe.

In Canada, sheriffs help the court system. They move prisoners and carry out court orders. In some places, like Alberta, they also help with traffic.
