Philately is the study of postage stamps. It is also the joy of collecting them.

You do not even need to own stamps to be a philatelist. You can study rare stamps in a museum instead.

People study many parts of a stamp. They look at the paper and the ink. They check the gum on the back. They may use tools to help. Collectors use stamp tongs, which are like special tweezers. They also use a magnifying glass to see small details. Some use a special tool to measure the holes on the edges.

There are many ways to enjoy this hobby. Some people collect by theme. This is called topical philately. They might look for stamps with birds, ships, or space.

Others study how mail travels. This is called postal history. They might look at airmail or even stamps from outer space.

Philately is a huge world. In the 1970s, millions of people were involved.
