Folk art

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Folk art is a special way people express their culture. It includes many different types of art. Some art is tangible, which means you can touch it. This includes things like pottery, baskets, or carvings. Other art is intangible, which means you experience it through your senses. This includes things like music, dance, and storytelling.

Folk art is important because it reflects the life of a community. It shows what people value and how they live together. Unlike fine art, folk art objects often have a practical use. They are made to help with daily tasks in a household.

Making folk art is a very personal process. Most pieces are made one at a time by hand. This is called a one-off production. Because they are not made in big factories, every piece is unique.

An artist might use a machine to help, but the work is still special. Makers often use materials they find nearby in their own towns. This might be wood, clay, or even paper. The skill of the maker shows in the beautiful decorations. It also shows in how well the object works for its job.

Learning to make folk art is often a community effort. In the past, people learned through apprenticeships. A young person would study under a local expert, like a blacksmith. Today, some people learn in technical schools. Other artists are self-taught and work alone.

Even if someone cannot go to a formal school, they can still become a great artist. For example, Maud Lewis was a famous Canadian folk artist. She painted thousands of scenes from life in Nova Scotia. She faced many challenges but still shared her vision with the world.

Traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. Families often teach their children the same skills. This keeps the culture alive for a long time.

For instance, George Lopez is a sixth-generation carver from New Mexico. His children also learn to carve. Other groups, like the Yorok-Karok, pass basket weaving skills through relatives. This sharing of knowledge helps the art stay strong. It also allows new artists to add their own new ideas. This prevents the old traditions from becoming stuck in one way.

Folk art has a big impact on the wider world of art. Famous artists have looked at folk styles for inspiration. Pablo Picasso was inspired by African masks and sculptures. The artist Natalia Goncharova used ideas from Russian prints called luboks.

Groups like UNESCO work to protect these traditions. They help organize festivals for music and dance. In the United States, the National Endowment for the Arts also helps. They support artists who keep cultural heritage alive through research and education.
