Vernacular architecture is the way people build homes and structures using local traditions. It is not a specific style or a single movement. Instead, it is a very large category of buildings. These buildings are often made without professional architects or designers. They are built to meet the immediate needs of a local community. One expert named Amos Rapoport estimated a huge number for these buildings. He said they make up about 95% of the world's built environment.

How these buildings work depends on what is nearby. Builders use materials they can find in their own region. They do not use formal training from a school. Instead, they use skills passed down through many generations. They follow local customs to make sure the building fits the area. For example, they might use mud bricks or wood. This makes the buildings a way to show a group's culture.

The history of this word is quite interesting. The term "vernacular" comes from a word meaning "native" or "home-born." It was used in a specific way by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1857. At that time, he used the word to describe common buildings he did not like. Later, the meaning changed to be more positive. In 1964, Bernard Rudofsky helped make the idea popular. He held an exhibition called "Architecture Without Architects" at the Museum of Modern Art.

Many different types of buildings are part of this group. You might see a yurt or a log cabin. There are also stilt houses in places like Cempa. Some buildings are even made of mud, like the Nubian settlements. In the late 1960s, people spoke about "commercial vernacular" in American suburbs. This includes buildings like the shotgun houses in Mobile, Alabama.

Today, many professional architects study these everyday buildings. They look at how local designs handle the weather. This helps them create sustainable design, which is good for the planet. Architects like Hassan Fathy used traditional mud brick vaults in his work. Others, like Balkrishna Doshi, research local styles to find new ideas. Even the famous Frank Lloyd Wright thought these buildings were worth studying. They show us how to live well in our own environments.
