Thatching is a very old way to build a roof.

Builders use dry plants like straw, water reed, or palm branches. They layer these plants so that water runs away from the inside. Because the plants are packed tightly, they trap air inside the roof. This makes the thatch work as insulation to keep a home warm.

People use this method in both hot and cold places around the world. It is a way to build that is friendly to the Earth.

To make a roof, a worker must follow a careful way it works. First, they bundle the straw into groups called yelms. These yelms are taken up to the roof. The worker then attaches the plants using small staples called spars. These spars are made from sticks of hazel that have been twisted.

The thickness of the layers is very important for the roof to last. A good roof must have enough thatch to cover the fixings. If the fixings become visible, it is time for a new layer.

Thatching has been used for a very long time by many people. In Europe, people likely used rushes or heather in the late Palaeolithic period. Later, people began using straw during the Neolithic period when they grew cereals.

Many groups in the Americas, like the Inca and the Aztec, lived in thatched buildings. In the United Kingdom, thatch was the main roof for many people in the countryside until the late 1800s. Today, there are about 1,000 full-time thatchers working in the UK.

Different parts of the world use different plants for their roofs.

In Bali, Indonesia, people use black fibres from the sugar palm called ijuk. In Hawaii, builders use a plant called alang-alang. In Fiji, they combine fan palm leaves with reed walls. In the United States, the Seminole and Miccosukee people use palmetto leaves. In the UK, many roofs use wheat straw or water reed. Most of the water reed used in the UK now comes from places like Turkey or China.

Some people worry that thatch might catch fire easily. However, some say it burns slowly, like a closed book.

Most fires actually happen because of problems with chimneys or wood burners. To stay safe, people can use smoke detectors in the roof space. They can also use fire retardant to help stop flames from spreading. Even though it is an old method, many people today choose thatch because it looks rustic and helps preserve history.
