People who do this work are often called artisans or craftspeople. They make items that can be useful for daily life or beautiful to look at. Some crafts use natural materials like wood, clay, glass, or metal.

This kind of work is different from science or fine art. While science uses knowledge and art uses vision, craft relies on great technique.

Learning a craft often follows a very specific path. In the past, a person started as an apprentice to learn from an expert.

Once they finished their training, they became a journeyman. A journeyman would travel to find a place to work and earn a living. After they set up their own shop, they could finally call themselves a master. This step-by-step way to reach mastery is still used in some countries today.

History shows us how crafts have changed over many years. In the Middle Ages, many people made goods on a small scale. Some people, like tinkers, focused on fixing things for others. In places like the Ottoman Empire, skilled workers were asked to open shops in the middle of town.

These people were different from farmers who lived on their own land. They relied on trading their goods with others to survive. In cities, these workers often joined groups called guilds to work together.

Crafting can even be part of very high technology.

For example, in 1968, people used craft skills to help a space mission. Workers wove wires by hand around electromagnetic cores to make memory for the Apollo 8 spacecraft. This is called core rope memory. Today, many people work in "studio craft." This means they work alone or in small groups. They might do things like glassblowing, weaving, or pottery in their own studios.

Even though machines make many things now, craft is still very important.

Large factories use mass production, but they cannot always match the special feel of a handmade item. In the late 19th century, a group called the Arts and Crafts Movement started in Britain. A man named William Morris was a leader of this movement. They believed that making things with high quality was very important. Today, you can find these beautiful items at craft fairs or in special stores.
