While durable in dry climates, adobe has specific structural limitations. Adobe walls are load-bearing, meaning they must carry their own weight into the foundation. Significant damage occurred during the 1976 Guatemala earthquake, the 2003 Bam earthquake, and the 2010 Chile earthquake. To meet building codes, blocks must have a specific compressive strength and a tensile modulus of rupture strength.

There are different ways to use earthen materials for construction. One method is making individual bricks to be assembled with adobe mud as a bond. Another method involves pouring or puddling soft adobe in layers. This technique is often called cob. In the Americas, indigenous peoples used these poured methods for thousands of years. It was only after the Spanish arrived that the use of wooden forms to make individual bricks became common.
