It is made of very tiny parts. These parts are called clay minerals. Most pure clay is white or light in color. But many clays look red or brown. This happens because of iron oxide.

Clay has a special way of working. When it is wet, it is plastic. This means you can shape it with your hands. The tiny mineral plates slip past each other. When clay dries, it becomes hard. If you fire it in a hot oven, it becomes even stronger. This is how we make ceramics.

People have used clay for a long time. Some pottery is 14,000 years old! In the past, people used clay tablets for writing. Today, we use clay to make bricks for buildings. Many people live in homes made of clay.

We also use clay to make paper and cement. In farms, clay helps soil hold onto nutrients. This helps plants grow well.
