This mineral is also called kaolin. It forms when rain and heat break down other rocks. This way of breaking down is called weathering.

Kaolinite has a special shape. It is made of tiny, flat plates. These plates are stacked in layers. Each layer has two main parts. One part is a tetrahedral sheet. This part has silicon and oxygen. The other part is an octahedral sheet. This part has aluminium and oxygen.

These sheets stick together very well. Because of this, the clay does not swell much when it gets wet.

When you add water, the tiny plates stick together. This makes the clay easy to mold. You can shape it into many things. If you dry the clay, it becomes hard.
