Modelling clay is a soft material used for building and sculpting.

People use it to make many different things. Artists use it to create beautiful sculptures. Designers use it to make models of cars and airplanes.

It is a very useful tool for many people. It allows them to turn an idea into a real shape. This material is special because it is malleable. That means it is easy to shape and change.

There are many ways that different clays work. Ceramic clay is a water-based substance made from minerals.

You can bake this clay in a hot oven called a kiln. This process is called firing. Firing turns the clay into ceramics like porcelain or stoneware. Paper clay is a different kind of ceramic. It has small bits of cellulose fiber added to it. When you fire it, the paper burns away. This leaves behind a strong clay body.

Oil-based clay is made from oils, waxes, and minerals.

Unlike water-based clay, the oils do not evaporate. This means the clay stays soft even in dry places. It does not dry out like other types. Because it stays soft, it is great for stop motion animation. Animators can bend and move the models many times. You cannot fire this clay to make it a ceramic. Instead, people use it to make detailed shapes for molds.

Many people have worked to make these special clays. In 1880, Franz Kolb patented Plastilin in Germany.

Later, Claude Chavant developed it in 1892. Another kind, called Plasticine, was invented in 1897. William Harbutt made this version in Bathampton, England. There is also a brand called Roma Plastilina. Its formula is over 100 years old. Some of these clays contain sulfur. This can make it hard to use certain moldmaking tools.

Polymer clay is another popular choice for many creators. It is often sold in craft and hobby stores. Most polymer clays do not actually contain clay minerals. Instead, they harden when you heat them for about 15 minutes.

They do not shrink or change shape much when they get hard. This makes them great for making small, detailed items. Children and professional artists both love to use it. It is a wonderful way to bring art to life.
