Pottery is the wonderful art of making objects from clay.

People use clay and other raw materials to form vessels and many other shapes. These objects are then heated at very high temperatures to make them hard. This process makes the items durable so they can last a long time. You might use pottery for tableware or even decorative art. Some pottery is used for science in laboratories or for electrical parts.

It is a skill that combines useful tools with beautiful art.

Making pottery follows a specific way of working. First, a potter forms a clay body into a shape. They can decorate the piece before or after it is heated. Next, the object goes into a kiln or a large bonfire. The temperature in a kiln can reach between 600 and 1,400 degrees Celsius. This intense heat causes permanent changes in the clay. These changes make the object much stronger and more rigid.

This heat is what turns soft clay into a solid object.

Pottery is one of the oldest inventions in human history. Some very old clay figures date back to 29,000 BC. These include the Venus of Dolní Věstonice found in the Czech Republic. The earliest known pottery vessels were found in Jiangxi, China. Those vessels date back to 18,000 BC. Other early pieces have been found in Japan and Sub-Saharan Africa.

These discoveries show that people have been making pottery for many thousands of years.

There are three main types of pottery to learn about. Earthenware is fired at low temperatures, often below 1,200 degrees Celsius. It can be reddish, which is often called terracotta. Stoneware is fired at higher heat, from 1,100 to 1,200 degrees Celsius. It is very tough and does not let liquids soak through.

Porcelain is the highest fired type, reaching 1,400 degrees Celsius. It is very strong and can even be translucent, which means light passes through it. Porcelain was first made in China and later reached Korea and Japan.

Archaeologists study old pottery to learn about ancient people. Because pottery is so durable, it survives even when other things rot away. Scientists use fabric analysis to study the clay and its patterns. This helps them understand how people lived, traded, and used tools. They can even use pottery to help date how old a site is.
