It is known for being very white, strong, and hard. One of its most amazing features is translucency, which means light can shine through it.

Because it is so smooth and pretty, it is often called "china." People use it for many things, from fancy dinner plates to small statues. It is also used for important jobs in science labs and even for parts in power lines.

Potters start with raw materials like a clay called kaolinite. They shape the clay into objects and then put them in a very hot oven called a kiln. The heat must be extremely high to make the material change. This change is called vitrification, which turns the clay into a glass-like state. This process makes the porcelain strong and prevents water from soaking through it. Sometimes, potters add colorful decorations using minerals like cobalt or copper. They might even fire the pieces two or three times to get the colors just right.

Porcelain has a long and interesting history that began in China.

Chinese potters spent hundreds of years experimenting to perfect their craft. They started with early versions called "proto-porcelain" during the Shang dynasty. By the Tang dynasty, they had mastered how to make it very white and clear. During the Song dynasty, making porcelain became very organized. They used huge "dragon kilns" to bake many pieces at once. These kilns could hold as many as 25,000 pieces in a single firing. By the Ming dynasty, the city of Jingdezhen became a famous center for making the best porcelain.

There are three main ways to make porcelain today.

The first is hard-paste porcelain, which was invented in China. It is made of materials like kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. The second type is soft-paste porcelain. This was an early attempt by European potters to copy Chinese styles using clay and other mixtures. The third type is bone china, which was first made in England in 1748. Bone china uses bone ash as an ingredient to make it very fine. Even though it started in England, people now make bone china all over the world.

Porcelain has traveled across the whole world over many centuries.

In the past, it was sent along the Silk Road to places like the Islamic world. Later, merchants from Portugal and the Netherlands brought it to Europe by sea. The English name "porcelain" actually comes from an old Italian word for a sea shell. This is because the smooth surface of the pottery looks just like a cowrie shell. Today, porcelain is still very important to people everywhere. In 2021, the market for porcelain plates and bowls was worth over 22 billion dollars.
