It is made by heating raw materials in a hot oven called a kiln. One main ingredient is a clay called kaolinite. The high heat makes the clay turn into a hard, glass-like material. This makes porcelain very strong and white. It is also translucent, which means light can shine through it.

People first made porcelain in China. Chinese potters spent many years learning how to make it. By the Tang dynasty, it was very white and clear.

Later, the Ming dynasty made famous blue-and-white pieces. These were sent all over the world.

There are three main types of porcelain. Hard-paste porcelain is the finest kind. Soft-paste porcelain is made with different mixtures. Bone china is another kind. It was made in England using bone ash. People use porcelain for many things. You might see it as pretty plates or bowls. It is also used for tools in science labs.
