People use heat to make clay hard. They use a hot oven called a kiln. This makes the art strong and lasting.

Ceramics can be many things. They can be tiles, small figures, or dishes. Some are made to be used for food. Others are made just to be beautiful.

Artists use many ways to decorate. They might use a glaze. A glaze is a coating that makes clay shiny. They can also use slip. Slip is a liquid mixture of clay and minerals. An artist might paint with slip. They can also use sgraffito. This means scratching through colored slip to show the clay underneath.

There are different types of clay art. Earthenware is a common type. It is often porous, which means it can hold water. Stoneware is harder and fired at high heat. Porcelain is very special. It is white and can let some light through.
