Ceramic art is a plastic art made from inorganic, non-metallic materials.

These materials, such as clay, are shaped and then subjected to intense heat. This process transforms soft earth into hard, durable objects. Ceramics include many forms like pottery, tiles, figurines, and sculptures. Some pieces serve as fine art, while others are industrial or decorative. Because they last so long, ceramics are vital archaeological artefacts. They often provide the only remaining evidence of vanished cultures.

The creation of ceramic art involves several technical stages. First, the maker shapes the clay into a desired form. Some artists use slipware techniques during this stage. Slip is an aqueous suspension of clay and minerals like quartz or feldspar. An artist might apply an engobe, which is a colored slip coating. This can improve the surface or mask an inferior clay color. Another method is sgraffito, where one scratches through a layer of slip. This reveals a different color from the base body underneath.

After shaping, the object must undergo firing in a kiln. This application of heat causes chemical and physical changes. Many ceramics also receive a glaze to create a decorative surface. A glaze is a coating that is fired so it bonds to the body. Some artists use underglaze decoration before the final glaze is applied. Others use overglaze painting, which requires a second firing at a lower temperature. This allows for intricate designs using brushes, stencils, or even lithography.

Ceramics are categorized by their material composition and firing temperatures. Earthenware is a common type made from clay, quartz, and feldspar. It is fired at lower temperatures and is not vitrified. This means it remains permeable to water. Terracotta is a specific type of earthenware that is often unglazed. It is used for everything from flower pots to building bricks.

Stoneware is a denser, nonporous ceramic fired at higher temperatures. It is often grey or brownish due to clay impurities. It is hard enough to resist scratching by a steel point.

Porcelain represents a highly advanced level of ceramic engineering. It is made by heating materials like kaolin in a kiln. High temperatures cause vitrification, which is the fusing of the material. This makes porcelain white, strong, and translucent. It also possesses high resistance to thermal shock and chemical attack. Bone china is a special type of soft-paste porcelain. It was developed by the English potter Josiah Spode. It contains at least 30% phosphate derived from animal bone ash. This addition allows the china to be produced in very thin sections.

The history of ceramics spans thousands of years across many cultures. The term comes from the Greek word keramikos, meaning pottery. Cultures like the Chinese, Greeks, and Persians are famous for their mastery. In Africa, the Nok culture produced ceramics over 2,000 years ago.

In the early twentieth century, the Arts and Crafts movement sparked a revival. This movement emphasized the skills of the individual maker. It moved away from the excessive decoration of the Victorian era. Instead, it focused on traditional, non-industrial production techniques.

Ceramic art connects the worlds of science and fine art. In modern engineering, ceramics is both an art and a science. It involves studying how heat acts on inorganic materials. This knowledge allows for the creation of both beautiful tableware and industrial tools. You can find significant collections in major museums globally. The Louvre in France and the Musee de la Ceramique de Sevres hold many treasures. From ancient Roman pottery to modern studio pottery, ceramics remain essential. They tell the story of human skill and material discovery.
